Overview
Classic Ladakh Circuit with Hanle, Umling La & Tso Moriri -11 Days / 10 Nights
A Ladakh road trip is not really about ticking off sights. It is about the slow climb from the plains into the high mountains, the air thinning a little more with each pass, and roads opening into a silence so wide it takes a while to get used to. Views appear around bends that make you forget you were mid-sentence. That is not a cliché; it genuinely happens somewhere between Sarchu and the More Plains, and most people stop reaching for their phones.
This Classic Ladakh Circuit starts in Chandigarh and takes you through Manali, Jispa, Leh, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, and Pangong Lake before ending at Leh Airport. Each stretch has its own character: the pine-covered slopes around Manali, the raw emptiness of the Manali-Leh Highway, the cold desert of Nubra, where sand dunes sit between Himalayan ranges, and that particular shade of blue at Pangong that shifts with the light and looks different every hour. Premium stays are planned at both Nubra and Pangong, not camps, not compromises, so you actually get to rest in places worth resting in.
If you have been looking for a Ladakh road trip that is unhurried, well-planned, and built around the journey as much as the destinations, this is it.
Tour Overview
The route is designed around one practical reality: altitude needs time. Rather than driving straight into Ladakh, this circuit first includes nights in Manali and Jispa. By the time you reach Leh on Day 5, your body has already spent three nights above 2,000 meters and crossed two high passes, Baralacha La and Tanglang La, in a single long drive. That gradual climb makes a real difference, especially for first-time Ladakh visitors.
The full route covers more ground than most standard packages: the Atal Tunnel entry and Sissu on the Manali side; Baralacha La and Sarchu on the highway; Leh's historical circuit, including Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, and the Indus-Zanskar Sangam; Khardung La into Nubra; Diskit Monastery and the Hunder Sand Dunes; the optional Turtuk excursion near the Line of Control; the Shyok Valley route directly to Pangong; and the Chang La crossing on the return to Leh. On other days, you walk around a monastery at your own pace or sit by a lake. That balance is what makes 11 days in Ladakh feel complete rather than exhausting.
Why Choose This Ladakh Circuit?
Most Ladakh packages from Chandigarh follow the same template: Leh, Nubra, Pangong, done. This one goes further and, more importantly, it goes slower.
The overland advantage: Flying into Leh drops you at 3,500 meters with no acclimatization. The road from Chandigarh via Manali and Jispa gives your body two full days to climb gradually, crossing Baralacha La (4,890m) and Tanglang La (5,328m) before descending into Leh. Altitude sickness is real; gradual acclimatization is the single most underrated part of planning a Ladakh trip.
The Jispa-to-Leh highway: This is the drive people mean when they say "Ladakh," unlike anywhere else in India. Darcha, Baralacha La, Sarchu, the More Plains, Tanglang La. Each stretch looks different from the last. The colors of the rock change. The scale of the landscape is disorienting in the best way. You cannot replicate this by flying in.
Nubra and Pangong: Saser Resort & Wellness in Nubra is a genuine mountain property with an indoor swimming pool, a gym, a bathtub, and views of the Karakoram range. Saser Scenic Pangong offers a heated cabin and hot water, just 50 meters from the most photographed lake in India. Two nights in Nubra and one night at Pangong mean you are not rushing through these places; you are actually staying in them.
The Shyok route: Most packages route you back through Leh to reach Pangong from Nubra, requiring you to backtrack 160 km. This itinerary uses the direct Shyok Valley route instead, which is remote, scenic, crosses riverbeds, and is completely off the standard tourist trail.
Turtuk: An optional day trip most packages skip. A Balti village 205 km from Leh, near the Line of Control, with narrow stone lanes, apricot orchards, and mountain views that feel like a different country. Worth the drive.
