The route is designed around one practical reality: altitude needs time. Rather than driving straight into Ladakh, this circuit first includes nights in Manali and Jispa. By the time you reach Leh on Day 5, your body has already spent three nights above 2,000 meters and crossed two high passes, Baralacha La and Tanglang La, in a single long drive. That gradual climb makes a real difference, especially for first-time Ladakh visitors.
The full route covers more ground than most standard packages: the Atal Tunnel entry and Sissu on the Manali side; Baralacha La and Sarchu on the highway; Leh's historical circuit, including Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace, and the Indus-Zanskar Sangam; Khardung La into Nubra; Diskit Monastery and the Hunder Sand Dunes; the optional Turtuk excursion near the Line of Control; the Shyok Valley route directly to Pangong; and the Chang La crossing on the return to Leh. On other days, you walk around a monastery at your own pace or sit by a lake. That balance is what makes 11 days in Ladakh feel complete rather than exhausting.

The Jispa-to-Leh highway: This is the drive people mean when they say "Ladakh," unlike anywhere else in India. Darcha, Baralacha La, Sarchu, the More Plains, Tanglang La. Each stretch looks different from the last. The colors of the rock change. The scale of the landscape is disorienting in the best way. You cannot replicate this by flying in.

Day 2Chandigarh to Manali
After breakfast, you head to Manali. The drive takes you through Bilaspur, Sundernagar, Mandi, and Kullu, all river towns and small hill settlements that ease you gently into the mountains. As you near Manali, the weather is noticeably cooler, and the valley is filled with pine trees and rushing rivers. Arrive by evening and check in.

Day 3Manali local sightseeing
A relaxed day in Manali. Start with Hadimba Devi Temple, tucked into a deodar forest and genuinely beautiful, not just touristy. Then head to Vashisht Temple and its hot springs, a short walk away. You can also visit the Tibetan Monastery, Van Vihar, and Mall Road, depending on energy and interest. The evening is yours. Manali has good cafés, woolen shops, and plenty of walking.

Day 4Manali to Jispa via Atal Tunnel and Sissu
This is the day the trip truly feels Himalayan. You leave Manali, enter the Atal Tunnel, and emerge on the other side into a completely different world, with open valleys, rocky ridges, and wide skies replacing the green forests behind you. Stop at Sissu for its waterfall and mountain setting, then continue through Keylong to Jispa, a quiet village beside the Bhaga River. It is a short drive by Ladakh standards, but it sets the tone for what is ahead.

Day 5Jispa to Leh via Baralacha La, Sarchu, and Tanglang La
With an early start today, this is the longest drive of the trip and arguably the most memorable. The route covers Darcha, Baralacha La, Sarchu, Nakee La, Lachulung La, Pang, More Plains, and Tanglang La. That is a lot of names, and every stretch looks different. The mountains change color as the day goes on. The road opens into plains so wide they feel surreal. By the time you are dropping into Leh in the evening, you will understand why people talk about the Manali-Leh Highway the way they do.

Day 6Leh local sightseeing
A slower day in Leh is exactly what you need after yesterday's drive and the altitude. Start with Shanti Stupa for views over the town, then head to Leh Palace, one of Ladakh's older surviving structures. The afternoon includes the Hall of Fame (maintained by the Indian Army and genuinely worth the visit), Magnetic Hill, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, and the Indus-Zanskar Sangam, where the two rivers meet. The evening is free for the market, a café, or just sitting somewhere quiet.

Day 7 Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La
After breakfast, you head to Khardung La and into the Nubra Valley. The pass itself is dramatic, with snow peaks, switchbacks, and views that make the slow climb worthwhile. Nubra is a cold desert, and the contrast of sand dunes surrounded by the Himalayan ranges makes it so striking. Visit Diskit Monastery and the giant Maitreya Buddha statue, then head to Hunder for the famous double-humped Bactrian camel rides (optional, at your own cost). You have two good options today. Turtuk is a Balti village near the Line of Control, with narrow lanes, old stone houses, apricot orchards, and mountain views that feel far removed from the usual tourist trail. The drive there is worth it for the scenery alone. If you prefer a slower day, the resort and the area around Hunder and Diskit are enjoyable on their own. There is no wrong answer here.

Day 9 Valley to Pangong Lake via Shyok Route
The Shyok Route connects Nubra directly to Pangong, so there is no need to backtrack through Leh. It is remote and beautiful: river crossings, empty valleys, small villages, and long stretches where you will see almost no one. Road conditions can vary, so keep the day flexible. When you arrive at Pangong, the view hits differently than any photograph suggests: that particular shade of blue, those bare brown mountains reflected in the water, and complete quiet. Check in to Saser Scenic Pangong, a cabin-style stay right by the lake with heating and hot water.

Day 10Pangong to Leh via Chang La
Wake up early. Sunrise at Pangong is not something to sleep through; the light and color on the water shift by the minute in those first hours. After breakfast, drive back to Leh via Durbuk, Tangtse, Chang La, and Karu. It is a high-altitude desert route with wide vistas and small Ladakhi settlements along the way. Arrive in Leh by evening. Last chance for shopping or a quiet night before the trip ends.
